ApprovedOur proposal for our 510-acre property was overwhelmingly approved by Fullerton’s City Council!  The City found the plan is consistent with a community-wide plan and agreement created for the property by homeowners, community activists as well as elected and appointed city leaders.

Our plan – with its 10 miles of new trails and tens of millions of dollars in benefits to the city – enjoys support from a broad base throughout Fullerton, including six former mayors, project neighbors, hikers, educators and the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce.

We are grateful for everyone who has supported our efforts.

The facts on OCTA's habitat acquisition program

4/6/2011

MoneySome have suggested the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) would like to purchase our 510-acre West Coyote property as part of its environmental mitigation program for freeway construction.

We met with OCTA to see if this is accurate, and they told us it is not.  It turns out the $242 million OCTA originally had proposed for habitat acquisition has shrunk to only about $120 million, and only $42 million is available over the next several years.

Most of this $42 million has already been pledged to projects that meet OCTA’s criteria; namely, properties that connect to other wildlife preserves or corridors (West Coyote Hills is surrounded by development).

We also learned that West Coyote Hills does not meet the program’s criteria.  One reason is that most of the quality habitat that does exist at West Coyote Hills is already pledged for preservation as a result of our extensive work with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and our commitment to preserve 55 percent of the site.

If you’d like to read our correspondence with OCTA, click here.

The OCTA program is the latest in a decade-long effort by project opponents to secure government/taxpayer dollars to purchase West Coyote Hills; despite the harsh reality that funding for parks and land acquisition has been cut at all levels of government.
